Five Things To Do When You’re Stressed

Being stressed is such a yuck feeling. Whether you work in a customer service role, are a uni student, or a high-rolling banker, you probably know what it’s like to be stressed. When I’m stressed out from uni I get headaches, neck and shoulder pain, stomach pains, and mild eczema between my fingers. Plus there’s the fact that it’s really hard to sleep at night when you’re worried about something.

With the end of semester looming for Australian uni students, exams and final assignments are fast-approaching. So, here are five things that I do to cope with stress.

5 Things To Do When You're Stressed

  • Take a deep breath. Just pause for a minute and try and calm yourself down. Is the thing that you’re worrying about really that important? Will it matter in five years? If no, then relax a bit. It’s not a big deal. If yes, then keep taking those deep breaths and proceed to the next tip…
  • Make a to-do list. When you have multiple things to do piling up on you, sometimes it helps to make a list and prioritise them. When I do this I’ll usually put something that I’ve already done on the list just so I can tick it off to get a small sense of achievement and some motivation. Then I get stuck in to the nitty-gritty. Do things in small steps so they’re more manageable. But you really just need to…
  • Get on with it. If you’re stressed about something that you have to do (in my case it’s usually uni work) then the best way to get rid of your stress is to actually sit down and get started. It’s the hard-line, I know, but it’s the truth. If you do it then it will be over with! There more you procrastinate, the less time you will have and the more stressed you will be. If you start working on it, even doing just a tiny amount at a time, it will help relieve your stress and get you closer to achieving your goals. Don’t forget to take breaks away from the stress though. I like to…
  • Take a walk on the beach. Sometimes you need to take some time out for yourself and do something that you enjoy. All work and no play makes life suck. I like going to the beach and either walking along the shoreline or sitting in the sand. Soak up some sunlight, watch the waves rolling, and get things into perspective. Take a book with you and have a read, and maybe even…
  • Have some chocolate. I really, really wish my final piece of advice was something super healthy like ‘get some exercise’ but if I’m being honest, the last thing I want to do is exercise when I’m stressed (unless it’s yoga, yoga is always good). And besides, that walk on the beach has to count for something, right? Sometimes you just need a bit of chocolate to get you through. But if you actually like chia seed puddings and going for runs or whatever, then good for you. Do whatever feels right for you. Just pass me the freaking chocolate.
